There have been a few key experiences that have shaped me as an actor and a theatre maker. One such project was being part of Michael Boyd’s Histories ensemble member at the Royal Shakespeare Company from 2006-2008. Michael’s work - his approach to Shakespeare - inspires me to this day.
I’m an associate artist of Out Of Chaos, and together we’ve been creating innovative 2-person Shakespeare productions. So far we‘ve toured A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Macbeth. The approach to the verse is as rigorous and dynamic as that of the Histories ensemble, the staging is playful and inventive using lighting and sound to create atmosphere and environment, and the story, although streamlined slightly, is true to the original. The third cast member is always the audience: they are invited to engage deeply and respond to what’s happening in the story - sometimes as characters, sometimes as witnesses.
Another key experience was my training at the Curious School of Puppetry where I discovered the wonder of using puppets in story-telling and the magic of simple object manipulation. This training led me to begin making children’s theatre and to start taking puppet making commissions.
After meeting some local mums and fellow artists in 2020 Flock Theatre Makers was born and we created the show There’s A Tiger In The Garden. Devising this show and constructing the puppets for it was the springboard for creating more theatre for young audiences. I believe theatre for young people is vital as entertainment, escapism, education and to show children a world beyond their own. I like to make work that is physical, musical and inventive, igniting an audience’s imagination.
